At the beginning of the story, we follow the life of John Watson, a man who graduated from the University of London in the course of medicine and not satisfied with the degree obtained, enters the course to be an army doctor and is later drafted and serves in the English army during the Second Afghan War. After being wounded during the conflict Watson becomes ill and his health takes a severe toll, he takes sick leave and is sent back to England to recover. Without having any family, Watson decides to live in London, but in the city he ends up spending practically all his money on staying in a hotel and worried he sees the need to live in a cheaper place. In a bar Watson ended up unexpectedly meeting Stamford, an old co-worker who presents him with the solution to his problem.
This colleague of yours says he has another acquaintance who wants to find a partner to share the rent of a house or apartment, but he is a man of "weird" ideas. Determined, Watson goes with his colleague to the chemical laboratory of the local hospital to meet this mysterious man, but when he gets there he is curious and fascinated by this man who makes a surprising observation, he says that Watson spent time in Afghanistan. This man has no college degree or "formal" education, but he proves to be extremely intelligent and insightful, this man is known as Sherlock Holmes.
After reaching an agreement, Holmes and Watson agree to look at some property the next day and find an apartment on Baker Street (221B) that meets all their needs and where they live. After a few days sharing the apartment with Holmes, Watson is intrigued as to his companion's occupation, as he notices that Holmes hardly talks about his activities, but Watson notices that he receives people completely different from one another in the apartment. When questioned, Holmes claims that these visits are part of his "job", which Watson discovers through his own roommate that he is the only consulting detective in the world to help people and detectives solve cases, until then, unsolved.
At one point, Watson and Holmes' tranquility and routine change when the latter receives a message from Tobias Gregson, a Scotland Yard detective who turns to Sherlock Holmes for help in solving a case. A man was found dead in a horrible position in an abandoned house, this house has no sign of a break-in and the man does not show any marks or signs of perforation. After some insistence from Watson, Holmes decides to go to the place and invites the doctor to accompany him. Arriving at the scene Holmes makes several observations and prepares a report that only leaves Watson with more doubts and now Holmes decides to investigate the case in depth and bring to light the person responsible for the crime.
