About the author

Patrick Süskind (Ansbach, Bavaria, Germany, March 26, 1949) is a German writer.

Son of writer and journalist W. E. Süskind, Patrick studied Modern and Medieval History at the University of Munich and in Aix-en-Provence, France. He first published some short stories, including: “Uma Batalha” – included in an anthology, A Pomba, in 1979. But it was “O Perfume”, released in 1985, his first successful book, followed by “ A História do SR. Sommer” in 1991 and, in 1995, “Três Histórias”. Another work that made him famous was the dramatic monologue “The Contrabass”.

Very little is known about the life of Süskind, who is considered one of the most withdrawn people on the German literary scene. Süskind even avoids book signings and is not very sympathetic to the idea of turning his books into films, fearing that they will be plagiarized or faked. Despite this, “the Perfume” was made into a film by Tom Tykwer, having premiered on September 14, 2006.

In addition to being a writer, Patrick is also a television scriptwriter. He wrote some scripts for German TV, such as the series Der ganz normale Wahnsinn. Alongside Helmut Fischer, he wrote the screenplay for Rossini, a story that takes place in the underworld of Munich. “O Perfume” was initially published in chapters, in the newspaper Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, reviving the tradition of serials. The series “O Perfume” was so successful that at the end of that same year (1985) it was turned into a book. The work reached the top of the bestseller lists in most countries where it was published.
