Charlie Chaplin: A Life From Beginning to End

Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. was born in London on April 16, 1889. His parents were artists and separated shortly after his birth, and Chaplin's early years were spent in the company of his mother and brother.

Chaplin became famous for creating and playing the most famous and captivating character in the history of cinema: the friendly tramp Carlitos, a very poor alter-ego. With his worn hat, his old bamboo cane and Chaplin's baggy, patched pants, he became an icon that represented a critique of the social context of the time.

Carlitos conquered the world in silent cinema times and Chaplin used body language to express himself. His mere appearance was always a reason for laughter due to his caricatured and naive walk. However, although Chaplin's films were mostly dictated by his comic vein, they always had traces of drama and clear social criticism.

The personal life of the perfectionist artist was troubled in terms of his relationships and also in his political activities. Chaplin's first two marriages were to teenagers and ended in divorce. In addition, his tendency towards leftist movements prevented him from returning to the US at a given period.

Charles then went to live in Switzerland, returning to the US only in 1972 to receive an award, when he was cheered for 12 minutes.

Sir Charles Spencer Chaplin Jr. teve oito filhos com Oona O’Neill, com quem era casado e se exilou na Suíça. Ele  faleceu na noite de Natal de 1977, aos 88 anos de idade.

after its creation, the character continues to enchant people of all ages, consecrating Charles Chaplin as the greatest actor of all time.
